International Men’s Day
MMBGIMS celebrated International Men’s Day on Saturday 25th November 2023 along with 52 students of MMS Semester I and 12 students from MMS Semester III by organizing a session on mental health and zero male suicide. Dr. Richa Arun Shete, a renowned MD in Community Medicine, led the discussion, highlighting the importance of mental health awareness and encouraging men to seek help when needed. Dr. Shete challenged the outdated societal norms that have stereotyped men as emotionless pillars of strength, preventing them from expressing vulnerability and seeking help. She emphasized the harmful effects of suppressing emotions, which can lead to stress, anxiety, and frustration. Drawing from her extensive experience in mental health advocacy, Dr. Shete stressed the importance of validating emotions and creating safe spaces for men to open up. She encouraged active listening, empathy, and unwavering support for those seeking help. Through an engaging role-play, Dr. Shete demonstrated effective communication techniques, emphasizing the importance of acknowledging problems, validating emotions, and reassuring individuals while encouraging professional help. The session had a significant impact on the students, who gained valuable insights into mental health and the importance of fostering a supportive environment for men. They learned to recognize the signs of mental distress and approach those seeking help with empathy and understanding.
