ChatGPT vs. Microsoft Copilot vs. Gemini:

MM BGIMS MMS students take a tour across and recommend

     – Suvarna Bamne & Subrato Das

As students of the MMS Batch 2023-2025 at MM BGIMS, we often reflect on how prepared we are to navigate the world and succeed in a way that leverages technology to enhance our capabilities and productivity. When it comes to Artificial Intelligence (AI), we find ourselves at a crossroads—trying to choose the best tools from the wide array available to us.

In today’s competitive and complex environment, AI plays a significant role, not only in corporate settings but also in personal productivity. It empowers individuals to generate innovative ideas and increase efficiency, giving those who embrace it a distinct advantage. AI spans across various sectors, revolutionizing the way we work and live. However, it’s essential to remember that while AI can provide valuable insights and suggestions, users should always cross-check facts and figures from a human perspective, ensuring they don’t rely solely on AI-generated outputs.

    What is Artificial Intelligence?

Artificial Intelligence (AI) can help computer systems or machines simulate human intelligence on any given situation customizable in the form of a prompt. It basically feeds on previous data or patterns as inputs from the user as a part of machine learning.

    Figure 1: Illustration of comparison

We delve into three of the most popular AI platforms of 2024, exploring their user interfaces and putting various prompts to the test. Focusing on their free versions, we provide recommendations tailored to different specialisations, highlighting the optimal solutions to save time and resources.

Just as humans greet one another, AI platforms attempt to do the same. Here’s a look at how each platform responds to a given text prompt, allowing us to interpret the tone, style, and language they use in their interactions.

Look and feel of the welcome screen:

    Our Take –

ChatGPT offers a sleek, conversational interface designed for ease of use. With its chat-like format, it prioritizes text-based communication, creating a friendly and approachable experience. The design is modern and minimalistic, allowing for seamless interactions.

In contrast, Copilot is embedded within coding environments, focusing on functionality and developer efficiency. Its interface is more utilitarian, providing tools that deliver real-time code snippets and suggestions, tailored to fit directly into a developer’s workflow.

Gemini, meanwhile, stands out with a visually rich interface that blends information with interactive elements. It often incorporates graphical displays, making it ideal for tasks that benefit from a more visual, engaging approach, appealing to users beyond text-based interactions.

In summary, ChatGPT excels at conversational flow, Copilot focuses on coding productivity, and Gemini emphasizes visual interactivity.

Tone – Friendly and emoticons used to express and lighten the mood.

    1. Gemini

Figure 7: Gemini Response to Prompt 1

Tone – Assertive and to the point.

Prompt 2 – Top five computing languages for programming and coding that you know?

When prompted to list the languages they understand, only Gemini accurately interpreted the question and provided a correct response about its own capabilities. In contrast, the other AIs offered general answers, listing languages that are widely used globally rather than focusing on their specific abilities.

    1. Gemini

Prompt 3 – Generate a prompt for the Subject Finance for Post Graduate students on the topic Investment Avenues.

Among the three, only ChatGPT and Gemini initially provided effective responses to the prompt, while Copilot failed to generate a proper response. However, after refreshing the page, ChatGPT, like Copilot, also struggled to produce a meaningful prompt related to the given topic, “Investment Avenues for Post-Graduate Finance students.” Gemini remained the only one able to consistently deliver an appropriate response.

Prompt 4 – Act as a Recruiter in Google and prepare Job Description for the role of a Relationship Manager (Sales) in India

Gemini performed well by professionally introducing the company and clearly outlining the Preferred Qualifications in a polished manner. ChatGPT structured the Job Description by providing the application website and listing the required skills separately. In contrast, Copilot’s response lacked the specific details requested in the prompt, failing to cover the necessary information.

Prompt 5 – How to delay lag time during production of mobile phones and increase sales. Act as an operations and marketing head

ChatGPT offers an additional recommendation, focusing on collaborative efforts between Operations and Marketing strategies, providing a more integrated approach. On the other hand, Gemini is more straightforward, addressing operational and marketing issues individually without offering extensive recommendations. Comparatively, Copilot follows a similar approach to Gemini but elaborates its solutions on a larger scale, providing more in-depth suggestions.

    Summary Table of Findings

MMS Specialisations Description OpenAI ChatGPT Microsoft Copilot Google Gemini
    Systems List 5 Programming languages
    Finance Prompt Generation
HR Human Recruiter posting JD Extensively led JD Brief & crisp Well explained, comprehensive
None of them included pay structure in JD
    Operations & Marketing Acting as a Head & Strategies provided 3.5/5 3/5 4/5
User Interface (UI) User Feedback Basic level performance Elaborative response Outperforms current AI available

    Note:

    1. We have used the free signed in versions of all three AI’s available on web browser.
    2. ChatGPT 4o version, Copilot on GPT-4, Gemini with 1.5 Flash.

     Interpretation:

    • When asked to list five programming languages they are familiar with, only Gemini provided a response focused on its own capabilities. ChatGPT and Copilot, however, compared their answers to global language trends.
    • When prompted to generate a financial topic for MBA students, both ChatGPT and Gemini responded with appropriate prompts, whereas Copilot failed. ChatGPT’s response stood out as being clear and concise, making it easy for the AI to recognize and respond effectively.
    • All AIs generated a response for a job description, but ChatGPT included sections on Skills and Application, while Gemini introduced the company and listed preferred qualifications. Here, Gemini fell short in comparison.
    • In the final comparison, all three responded, but Gemini was precise and to the point, Copilot followed suit, while ChatGPT’s response was more extensive, incorporating a Cross-Collaboration element.

    Conclusion:

    • Finance students can utilize ChatGPT for numerical assistance and cross-checking.
    • Systems/IT students will benefit most from using both Gemini and Copilot.
    • HR students can refer to ChatGPT and Gemini for relevant insights.
    • Marketing and Operations students are recommended to consult both ChatGPT and Gemini for their needs.
