Kargil Vijay Diwas is commemorated every 26 July in India to observe India’s victory over Pakistan in the Kargil War for ousting Pakistani Forces from their occupied positions on the Northern Kargil District mountain tops in Ladakh in 1999.
We at MMBGIMS celebrate this day in honour of the Indian Army. The movie Sardar Udham Singh is a biopic made on Udham Singh, a biographical historical drama film directed by Shoojit Sircar, and produced by Dharma Productions.
Who was Sardar Udham Singh ?
Udham Singh (born Sher Singh; 26 December 1899 — 31 July 1940) was an Indian revolutionary belonging to the Ghadar Party and HSRA, best known for assassinating Michael O’Dwyer, the former lieutenant governor of Punjab in India, on 13 March 1940. The assassination was done in revenge for the Jallianwala Bagh massacre in Amritsar in 1919, for which O’Dwyer was responsible. Singh was subsequently tried and convicted of murder and hanged in July 1940. While in custody, he used the name Ram Mohammad Singh Azad, which represents the three major religions in India and his anti-colonial sentiment.
The screening of “Sardar Udham Singh” created a profound emotional connection with the students, faculty, and staff present. The movie depicted the sacrifice and determination of a freedom fighter, evoking a sense of pride and national identity among the audience. The portrayal of historical events served as a reminder of India’s struggle for independence and the courage exhibited by those who fought for the nation’s freedom.
Post-screening faculties and students played National Anthem with pride. When you sing the national anthem, you are reminded of your identity as an Indian.
MMBGIMS recognizes the power of films in the learning process. Films have the unique ability to engage learners on an emotional level and stimulate critical thinking. The institution incorporates film screening as a pedagogical tool to enhance students’ understanding of complex concepts, promote discussion, and foster empathy and historical awareness.
